Service Description

Psychedelic-assisted therapy shows promise as a highly effective form of treatment poised to become a major new form of mental health care. This 4-hour workshop will provide health care professionals with an overview of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, with an emphasis on the importance of preparation and integration. This workshop will help clinicians understand the current state of psychedelic science, as well as to have more informed conversations with clients about psychedelics and their potential risks and benefits, legal status, and timeline for public accessibility. Research developments, including what conditions psychedelic-assisted therapy has the most evidence for, will be described. Leading scientific theories as to how psychedelics exert their therapeutic effects will be discussed, and the current legal status of psychedelics will be reviewed. Diversity and equity issues will be reviewed including lack of access for underserved and non-majority populations and the risks of cultural appropriation involved in modern psychedelic science. We will also provide recommendations on obtaining further training for those who want to learn more. Intended Audience: Beginning and Intermediate Clinicians After this course, participants will be able to 1. Participants will be able to describe the theory and practice of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy 2. Participants will be able to summarize research findings of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy 3. Participants will be able to describe the role of psychotherapy in preparation for and integration of psychedelic experiences 4. Participants will be able to to describe current legal status and increase ability to informed conversations with clients who are curious about psychedelics Brian Pilecki, PhD: Dr. Brian Pilecki is a clinical psychologist at Portland Psychotherapy that specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, trauma and PTSD, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Brian practices from an orientation based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and has extensive experience in the areas of mindfulness and meditation that he incorporates into therapy with clients. At Portland Psychotherapy, Brian is an active researcher and a study therapist on several clinical trials including the investigation of the use of MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of social anxiety disorder and the use of 5-MeO-DMT for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression.
