Service Description

This 8-session consultation group will focus on the skillful application of ACT as a process-based treatment. Emphasis will be on using the therapeutic relationship as an intervention, shaping curiosity, willingness, flexibility, and valued behavior, values articulation and discovery, and generalization. We will also address clinicians' barriers to being fully present in the session, taking bold risks, and leaning into trial-and-error learning. Clinicians are expected to present cases and provide constructive support for each others' cases. Teaching modalities involve discussion, experiential exercises, and role-/real-plays. Intended Audience: Intermediate and Advanced Clinicians. Participants will be expected to be comfortable with ACT, familiar with the DNA-V model, and use these approaches regularly in practice. This group is not well-suited for clinicians new to ACT. Educational Objectives 1. Describe Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) 2. Identify the behavioral processes targeted in an ERP/ACT intervention 3. Describe psychological flexibility as a set of behaviors that can be shaped as a target of contextual behavioral intervention 4. Explain how to shape psychological flexibility, including present moment awareness, defusion, valuing, and committed action. 5. Identify skills deficits that contribute to psychological inflexibility 6. Engage child and adolescent clients using valuing as action and direction to “contextualize” exposure and place exposure-based tasks under appetitive control 7. Describe the DNA-V model and the three functional classes of behavior it addresses 8. Shape Present Moment Awareness as a set of skills 9. Shape Defusion as a set of skills 10. Shape valuing and committed action as a set of skills Presenter: Dr. Lisa W. Coyne, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist with 25 years of experience working with young people with anxiety and OCD. She is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, is the Executive Director of NECOA Boston, a member of the Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board, and is on the Faculty of the Behavior Therapy Training Institute (BTTI) of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF). She has written many articles, chapters, and books on ACT with children, adolescents, and parents.
